SCIP Southern Cochlear Implant Programme

Home

A cochlear implant or CI is a surgically implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing. Cochlear implants are often referred to as a bionic ear.

The Southern Cochlear Implant Programme was established in 2003. It is located in Christchurch, New Zealand. There was a need for local support for South Island cochlear implant patients and their families, the Southern Cochlear Implant Programme aims to cater to this need. The SCIP team comprises a group of specialists who are dedicated to the identification and rehabilitation of children and adults with moderate to profound sensorineural hearing loss and who derive minimal benefit from conventional hearing aids.
